Consequences of Insurance

More importantly homeowner's insurance. We recently had a tornado hit our community and to say we were lucky is an understatement! Seven people lost their lives that day and several homes just don't exist anymore. Our next door neighbor lost over 98% of the trees in their yard, their roof was lifted off the walls of the house and put back down, debris was projected into his attic, and their metal shed completely disappeared with all the contents of their memories inside.
We lost 90% of trees, we had damage to our roof, numerous things such as patio furniture, smaller sheds, etc. were completely obliterated and it totaled a shed and damaged another in our yard, but that was the extent of the damage. We had more damage to trees than anything else in our yard, but the insurance only allows for $1,500 for tree removal. If the trees had landed on our house and damaged it, we would have received more on the tree removal claim. Crazy right!
Our insurance company sent someone out to investigate the property and start the claims process, several days after the tornado hit. He walked around for about 45 minutes, took a drone video of the property and went on his merry way. Later that week we received our first payment on the claim, with a second payment coming after we purchased the items that were damaged and sent them a receipt. Wait, What?? We've got to purchase the NEW items before you'll reimburse us?? I was blown away, what is the purpose of this? But it gets worse! The big dinger was when we received a letter from insurance company, a month after the tornado damage, saying they were canceling our policy and we had 3 weeks to obtain new insurance. What is the point of having insurance and paying on it for years, if you make a few claims, that aren't your fault, and they cancel you? I'm on the hunt so ya'll wish me luck. Until next time, have a great day and spread joy.
